Flexible

Overview

Essentium specializes in advanced TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane) filaments with top coatings of a unique low-friction feature, thanks to our proprietary MLF (Manufactured Layered Filament) technology. Our product range includes a variety of flexible thermoplastic filaments primarily made out of TPU. TPUs are an innovative class of copolymers known for their ability to blend the hardness and softness in a polymer chain. This results in a material that is easily moldable at high temperatures yet maintains a rubbery, flexible quality at room temperature. A standout in our collection is the Essentium Duratem – a high-temperature flexible filament, offering unparalleled performance in demanding applications.

HIGHLIGHTS

Hardness ranges from 80A to 74D
Coax filaments for reduced friction
Extraordinary toughness and impact resistance
ESD safe versions available
Chemically resistant to most solvents and cleaners

Duratem is a unique material made up of polyetherimide or PEI, polycarbonate or PC, and siloxane. Unlike other high-temperature materials on the market, Duratem has an impact strength of about 30 kilojoules per square meter, making it five times as strong as PEI 9085 and nine times as strong as PEKK. The base resin of Duratem meets UL 94V-0 flame testing standards at 1.6 millimeters and passes FAR 25.853 testing for flammability, heat release, smoke density, and toxicity. It also contains a non-halogenated flame retardant for health and safety.

Rapid Prototyping

Rapid Prototyping

The benefits of using additive manufacturing for prototyping were some of the first to be realized. During that age of Additive 1.0, manufacturers learned that they could skip the lengthy lead times and costly tool changes during initial iterations and accepted it despite its limitations. Additive 2.0 introduced rapid prototyping where manufacturers can use technology like the Essentium High Speed Extrusion (HSE™) 3D Printer to reduce the time to prototype to a few hours instead of days and instead of iterating with ABS or PA, they can design with the end-use material.

Tooling

Tooling

Traditional manufacturing methods are driven by CNC machines and injection molding machines, both of which require tools to be made, iterated, manufactured, and shipped. This entire process can take months, even with the best suppliers on the planet. With the Essentium High Speed Extrusion (HSE™) 3D Printing Platform, skip over the lead time and tooling costs, and create highly accurate molds, that can be tweaked on the fly. These 3D-printed tools can be printed in a matter of days at a fraction of the cost of traditional tooling and casting methods.

Casting

Casting

Avoid the high cost and long lead times of traditional tool creation and print molds on the Essentium High Speed Extrusion (HSE™) 3D Printing Platform. Manufacturers can create prototypes, iterate designs, and print the final part on the same platform and materials which saves time and increases quality.
