Essentium’s unique High Speed Extrusion technology magnifies the power of additive manufacturing by enabling speed and strength, at scale, to meet the volume production needs that other 3D printers just cannot match. In fact, the Essentium HSE 3D Printer was designed for industrial use by manufacturing and semiconductor professionals who could not find all the qualities they needed in a single solution to operate at scale…so we built our own.

We’ve dubbed it “the machine tool of 3D printers” because it has the size, speed, and capacity to operate at scale. Not only can it make the jigs and fixtures used by workers to assemble a product, it can make the molds to create those tools, as well as quantities of actual end-use parts themselves. And it can make something different every day. No retooling required.

When comparing the Essentium HSEâ„¢ 3D Printing Platform to other 3D printing technologies like fused deposition modeling (FDM) or fused filament fabrication (FFF), there is no denying high speed extrusion is the best alternative 3D printer for industrial use. Classic extrusion technology limits size and speed, and therefore does not scale into factory use. For example, desktop models from Ultimaker have open ecosystems, but are best for smaller laboratory testing and educational environments. Larger models from Stratsys are good for industrial prototyping and molding applications, but have closed ecosystems and are too slow to execute mass production. In short, legacy 3D printing technologies simply cannot compete on cost or volume with traditional manufacturing assets such as CNC machines, injection molding, or blow molding equipment designed to produce millions of identical units.

But Essentium’s high speed extrusion technology is changing how additive manufacturing is perceived on the factory floor. Today, an array of Essentium HSE 180•S printers could displace aging production line machinery or reduce dependence on outside suppliers by printing parts with equal speed and quality as subtractive methods. Here’s how:

  • Built for strength. The HSE 3D Printing Platform is engineered to work like a robot, not a printer, for optimal performance and durability. There are no belts or pulleys; rather the Essentium HSE 180 3D Printing Platform uses XY linear servo motor technology with only 10 moving parts for maximum reliability.
  • Built for speed. Five to 15 times faster than any other extrusion printer on the market, the HSE 3D Printing Platform deposits up to 500 mm of filament per second with 1 micron precision for the repeatability needed for production at scale. Weakness in the Z (vertical) direction has historically been one of the biggest problems with 3D printed parts. Our exclusive linear servo motor technology enables extremely accurate yet high speed movement of the print head over the build area. This gives it the ability to print each layer fast enough for superior Z strength bonding and durability in 3D printed parts, solving the phenomenon of delamination.
  • Built for scale. A build area measuring 690 x 500 x 600 mm (WxDxH) is large enough to fit more than 85% of all global jigs and fixtures. This gives the HSE 3D Printing Platform the ability to print large tools in one piece, significantly reducing post-printing multi-part tool assembly touches, or provide the space to print large volumes of end-use parts to keep pace with mass production.
  • Built on an open ecosystem. Use preferred materials to replace metal parts and tools. Essentium’s materials portfolio features a wide array of industrial-grade filaments with class-leading impact loading, fatigue, tensile, flexural, and thermal properties. But the HSE 3D Printing Platform can be used with any filament, Essentium’s or another brand, for unsurpassed flexibility.
  • Bridge to production. Immediately begin production without waiting weeks for molds to arrive. The HSE 3D Printing Platform can print quantities of parts for initial production runs, or dummy parts for placeholder assembly until the real part can be substituted.

Why is the Essentium HSE 3D Printing Platform the best choice for industrial applications? Because it offers the speed, strength, and scale to support your factory floor in ways other 3D printers cannot.
